Microsoft yesterday unveiled a revamped Live Search API. Developers can use the new Windows Live Search API to embed search on websites with more support for frequently used web-development technologies and less restrictions on how third parties use the technology on their websites.

Seagate intros 500 GB self-encrypting laptop drives

Today, Seagate announced it's rolling out two new self-encrypted laptop drives, designed to guard against information theft. Dell will be an initial OEM customer.

Seagate on Monday announced new full disk encryption (FDE) Momentus self-encrypted drives with capabilities of up to a half-terabyte, along with software from McAfee for encryption management. Although standalone editions of the 5,400 RPM and 7,200 RPM drives are available to consumers and organizations of all sizes, Seagate is also selling the FDEs to OEMs, starting with Dell.

AOL kills AOL Pictures service

AOL has notified its users that it is to close its AOL Pictures service at the end of the year. Consumers with images stored on AOL Pictures will be able to access them in 2009 via AOL's photo-service partner Pixum. US users are pointed at American Greetings PhotoWorks.

Amazon launches Windows Server 'cloud' service

Amazon Web Services has launched a public beta of its cloud-computing service running Windows Server and SQL Server, marking the first time developers and businesses can use the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to build and host applications on Microsoft's software.

Lower-cost virtualization -- priced at just $70 per seat -- wins out over laptops in a bid to deliver computer education to 1.8 million schoolchildren in an Indian province.

Undercut on pricing by virtualization vendor NComputing, former partners turned rivals Intel and One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) each got edged out this week on a deal to bring computing to 1.8 million schoolchildren in India.
